I am in a 룸알바 position to provide those insights, having worked in the nightlife industry for more than ten years as an important club promoter at such famous clubs as the Dream, Lavo, Slate, Etiquette, Up & Down, Marquee, Troy Liquor Bar, and more. This article is going to rectify all of that, explaining pretty much everything you would ever want to know about club promoters and the nightlife business surrounding them.
For most people, club promotion is a gig job, one many people stumbling onto, and falling off, just as easily. This depends mostly on how supportive the promoters you are working with are, as well as if you are trying to make a career as a club promoter, or just gigging. You really could land the job simply by having lots of friends – friends that love you enough that they are willing to drive to a club at 10pm to see you play what is likely to be a sparsely-occupied room.
Either convince a friend to do a little bit of part-time work for a club that you would want to go regularly to without paying, or spend time getting to know important people at it. Part-time jobs are often an excellent option if you have got a family and you do not want to leave them with a considerably smaller paycheck. Or, for individuals who prefer the flexibility of working part time, and who would like to switch to an evening shift, part-time jobs can be the smart move. Some companies are even offering part-time jobs as an option for individuals who prefer to work nights.
Not everyone that works nights has difficulty doing so, but those who do can probably greatly benefit from the schedule change. Working nights may help you save on bills, provide you with more flexible hours, and you will have extra time to meet personal or loved ones needs. The nightlife industry is massive in the college demographic, and if you are among the 76% of students who are concerned about making ends meet while studying, working a part-time gig in a nightclub might sound like an attractive option. Working behind the bar is one of the highest-paying part-time jobs for students — read the Saving Student Guide for more jobs that made the cut.
A first-year Kingston University student works as a photographer in the club, and told us how his job is quite different to working behind the bar, because it is so close to customers. Working behind the bar would have been an entirely different experience than working behind the camera as a club photographer, and not every job would have the same amount of harassment. Remember, just because a nightclub is an enjoyable place to work does not mean that you will find it an easy time at the job — working at a nightclub is usually fast-paced and demanding, with a lot of competition from other job seekers and co-workers. Nightclub hours are not in conflict with studying, and if you are the type of student that enjoys parties, it may feel like the job of your dreams.
Know a bouncer, a cashier, or someone on the bars staff — it is often easier to score free passes if one of your friends works there. Bartenders make drinks, serve them to customers in the bar, and hand them off to cocktail servers, who deliver drinks to customers elsewhere in the club. Promoters are hired by clubs to populate a clubs guest roster, ideally with women, and VIP hosts are hired by clubs as well, helping with booking bottles. A clubs promoter publicizes events such as concerts, answers questions, and usually coordinates everything from dates, to entertainment, to clean-up.
Also called a events promoter, a club promoter coordinates and advertises events such as concerts, open mics, and theme parties. A club promoter may work for the club or pub as an employee, on their own as a contractor, or in conjunction with a promotion or marketing company. Club promoters hours may include nights, nights, and weekends depending on the types of events they are promoting. Event events may attract thousands of people, so working as a promoter may be a perfect job for someone who likes to mingle.
As a promoter, you could be working on the entertainment scene of your local area, getting paid for attending events and networking. If you started out as a house-guest, bartender, or social media manager, you can make your way up to promoter position through bringing customers consistently. If you continue working on developing your brand and bringing in a profit-driven crowd, you could be an esteemed professional promoter, or even open up a promoting business of your own. These experiences led me to create my nightlife marketing firm Always The VIP, where I match guests to top nightlife spots and assist clubs and bars in developing promotions strategies that will help grow their businesses.
Sadly, most of us never get beyond the first tier – although landing the job in the club certainly helps. While we understand part-time jobs are the lifeline that many students rely on simply to get by in college, chances are that there are many other jobs available.

Bring a bunch of people: Talk with a promoter or manager at a club during the week and mention that you are coming with ten of us, and can you get us some freebies for the band. Get on a promoters guest list – Promoters are always looking for people to do small tasks for them in exchange for freebies for being on their guest list. Part-time benefits can consist of accommodating benefits including accommodating working hours or paid leave, discounted rates, or other rewards.
Even if you are working in commission work (meaning that you are paid on a per-sales-made basis), you should still be paid minimum wage on the basis of the number of hours worked.
